Finding Ninth Path Farm - Valley Botanicals

Finding Ninth Path Farm

A while back I sat down with a batch of mushroom extract from a supplier we'd used for months. Good paperwork, good price, nothing obviously wrong with it. But something about it didn't sit right. So I started asking harder questions — where exactly was this grown, how was it dried, what was actually tested for. The answers were vague. That vagueness is when I started looking properly.

The problem with most mushroom supplements

Here's the thing the industry doesn't advertise: a lot of mushroom products on the shelf aren't made from the mushroom at all. They're grown on grain, and what gets ground up and sold includes the grain starch along with a small fraction of actual fungal material. You can have a bag that says "Lion's Mane" on the front and be buying mostly oats.

Testing for the real active compounds — beta-glucans, in particular — isn't hard to skip if nobody's checking. And plenty of suppliers count on nobody checking.

Discovering Ninth Path Farm

Ninth Path came up in conversation with another small supplement seller who'd been burned the same way I had. What struck me first wasn't the marketing — there wasn't much of it — it was how specific the founder was willing to get. Fruiting body only, no grain fillers. Batch-level testing for beta-glucan content, not just a blanket certificate of analysis. Full traceability back to the grow room.

He wrote about all of this himself, plainly, without dressing it up. If you want it in his own words, read his piece on why you can trust Ninth Path — or more accurately, why you shouldn't just take his word for it either. It's the same standard I look for in every product we choose to carry.

What makes them different

A few things stood out once I dug in properly:

  • They grow and process everything themselves — no middlemen buying in bulk from unknown farms
  • Every batch is tested for actual active compound levels, not just "presence of mushroom"
  • They'll tell you exactly which farm, which harvest, which test results apply to what's in your bottle

None of that shows up on a label. You only find it by asking the questions most people don't bother asking.

Why this matters for you

When you take Lion's Mane or Reishi from us, you're not taking a symbolic amount of mushroom mixed into a lot of grain starch. You're taking extract from fruiting bodies grown by people who test what they sell and can prove it. That's the whole reason Valley Botanicals exists — not to sell you the cheapest version of something, but to stock the version that actually does what it says.

Sourcing isn't the exciting part of this business. It's the part that matters most.
