What Is Dual Extraction? Why It Matters for Mushroom Supplements

Why Extraction Method Changes Everything

You can grow the most potent Reishi mushroom in the world, but if it isn't extracted correctly, most of its active compounds will pass straight through you. The mushroom's cell walls are made of chitin — the same tough material found in insect exoskeletons — and the human digestive system cannot break it down efficiently.

Extraction is the process of breaking through that wall and concentrating the compounds that actually do something in the body. And not all extraction methods are equal.

What Is Dual Extraction?

Dual extraction uses two solvents — water and alcohol — to capture two distinct families of active compounds from the mushroom.

Water extraction (hot water decoction) captures beta-glucans — the polysaccharides responsible for immune modulation, gut health support, and the majority of the clinical research on functional mushrooms. Beta-glucans are water-soluble, so hot water extraction is essential to release them.

Alcohol extraction (ethanol tincture) captures triterpenes — the bitter, fat-soluble compounds found in high concentrations in Reishi that are associated with stress modulation, liver support, and anti-inflammatory activity. Triterpenes are not water-soluble. A water-only extract will not contain them in meaningful quantities.

Dual extraction combines both processes, concentrating the full spectrum of bioactive compounds into a single product.

What Does Single Extraction Miss?

A water-only extract — common in mushroom powders and many capsule products — will contain beta-glucans but will be largely devoid of triterpenes. For a mushroom like Reishi, where triterpenes are a primary driver of its adaptogenic and calming effects, this is a significant gap.

An alcohol-only extract captures triterpenes but loses much of the beta-glucan content. Neither approach alone gives you the full picture.

This matters most for Reishi, Chaga, and Cordyceps — mushrooms where both compound families contribute meaningfully to the therapeutic effect. For Lion's Mane, where the key compounds (hericenones and erinacines) are captured effectively by alcohol extraction, the distinction is slightly less critical — though dual extraction still produces a more complete product.

How to Tell If a Product Uses Dual Extraction

Supplement labels rarely make this easy. Here's what to look for:

  • "Dual extract" or "dual extracted" stated explicitly on the label or product page
  • Beta-glucan percentage listed — a verified beta-glucan content (typically 20–40% for quality extracts) indicates proper water extraction has occurred
  • Alcohol content or ethanol listed in the ingredients — liquid tinctures that contain alcohol have typically undergone alcohol extraction
  • Fruiting body only — dual extraction of mycelium on grain produces a diluted product regardless of method, because the substrate (grain starch) makes up a large proportion of the material

Our guide to choosing a quality mushroom supplement covers the full checklist.

Why Liquid Tinctures Are Often the Best Delivery Format

Dual extraction lends itself naturally to liquid tincture format. The water and alcohol extracts are combined into a single concentrated liquid, which is then taken sublingually (under the tongue) for rapid absorption — bypassing the digestive process that can further degrade compounds in capsule or powder form.

This is why the Ninth Path range uses liquid tinctures as its primary format. It's not a trend choice — it's the format that best preserves and delivers a dual-extracted product. Read more about why mushroom extraction matters.

The Bottom Line

If a mushroom supplement doesn't specify its extraction method, assume it hasn't been dual extracted. Single-extracted or unextracted products are cheaper to produce — and that cost saving comes directly at the expense of bioavailability.

For functional mushrooms to work, the compounds need to reach your bloodstream. Dual extraction is how you make that happen. Browse the Ninth Path range to see how we approach it.
